At some point, we all tend to wonder why we exist and what our purpose is. Who are we? What are we here for? What’s the meaning of life? Is there any meaning at all? Countless people have been trying to answer those questions for millennia. Every idea, philosophy, religion, and spiritual system is attempting to figure it all out. However, the Bible starts with the answer to these questions.
Genesis 1:1 “In the Beginning God Created the Heavens and the Earth.”
There is one, all-powerful, Creator-God. He personally created all that exists by simply speaking it into existence. The whole of the Biblical story is about Him and who He is. The Bible isn’t primarily about us, it’s about God and His revelation of Himself to us. Through His personal revelation, we can rightly understand who we are and how we ought to live.
God is the Creator of All things
His creation is good, but separate from Him. Yet, He is intimately involved with His creation and sustains it. Further, as Creator, God gets to define the parameters of creation. The massive problem with Humanity is that we are perpetually trying to define ourselves independent of the Creator’s original design. But humanity can never function with our intended purpose when we deviate from the Creator’s design.
As the Creator, God is:
· Self-Existent – He is not created, He has always existed (Ps. 90:2).
· Infinite – He is limitless, completely without any sort of boundary.
· Sovereign – He is all powerful and is in control of all things everywhere.
· Personal – When He creates, He speaks it into existence with great care.
· Good – God provides everything that needed for survival and blesses humanity.
Why are these attributes so important? Because the Self-existent, infinite, sovereign God—who is personal and good—is our creator! So, not only does He know what’s best as the eternal, limitlessness, all-powerful, creator, but He is personally involved with His creation. He is good and gracious towards us.
All Things Were Created for His Glory
God, in all of His splendor, greatness, and majesty, through His own will, chose to display His glory by creating everything. The Universe and humanity exist for God’s glory (Psalm 19:1-2; Isaiah 42:8, 43:7; Rev. 4:11).
We were made for glory! This is why we exhaust our lives making much of something: all of us will have something that we exalt and give worth to and order our lives around. We were created with a desire to pursue something beyond ourselves.
In the Truth of God as Creator, We Find Our Deepest Satisfaction
The human heart was made to be satisfied in God and make much of Him. And that is why we are never satisfied with the anything else we pursue as substitutes (Ps. 16:11)!
· Is your life being defined fully by the creator?
· What are you looking towards in order to satisfy your desire for glory? What is your life making much of?
