The Signs of the Times: Are We Paying Attention?

There is an hourglass sitting on a table somewhere right now, sand slipping grain by grain from the top chamber to the bottom. You cannot stop it. You cannot reverse it. You can only watch it move. And if you watch long enough, you begin to notice something: the closer you get to the end, the more obvious it becomes that time is running out.

This is precisely the picture the Bible paints about human history and the return of Jesus Christ. Scripture is clear that Jesus is coming back. He will judge the living and the dead, reward his people, and restore all of creation. And we are, with every passing moment, one second closer to that day than we were before. The question worth wrestling with is not whether it will happen. The question is whether we are paying attention to the signs that tell us it is drawing near.

In Matthew 24, the disciples asked Jesus directly: what will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age? Jesus did not give them a date. He gave them something far more useful. He gave them a pattern, a series of signs that would mark the season of his return. And when you hold those signs up against the world we are living in today, the picture that emerges is both sobering and deeply hopeful.

Deception Is Rising

The first sign Jesus points to is an increase in deception and confusion. He warns that many will come claiming to speak in his name, leading people away from truth rather than toward it. This is not merely a warning about cult leaders or fringe religious movements. It is a warning about the slow, subtle drift that happens when the language of faith gets borrowed and repurposed to serve ideologies that are fundamentally opposed to the gospel.

We are living in a moment when the vocabulary of salvation, words like healing, wholeness, affirmation, and care, is being attached to movements and ideas that lead people further from God rather than closer to him. False gospels rarely announce themselves as false. They come dressed in compassion. They come wrapped in the language of love. And that is precisely what makes them dangerous.

Jesus says to watch. Not with suspicion toward people, but with discernment about ideas. The answer to rising deception is not fear. It is a deep, abiding familiarity with the truth. You cannot spot a counterfeit unless you know the real thing.

The World Is Groaning

The second sign is an increase in destruction and chaos. Wars, famines, earthquakes in various places. Jesus calls these the beginning of birth pains. And the data around us confirms that these things are not simply continuing at their historical pace. They are accelerating. Military conflicts around the world have risen exponentially in recent decades. Major earthquakes are occurring with greater frequency across the globe.

But here is where the message takes a turn that might surprise you. The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 8 that all of creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth, waiting for the day when it will be set free from its bondage to decay. In other words, every earthquake, every hurricane, every act of global chaos is not simply a tragedy. It is creation itself crying out for its Redeemer.

This is not a message of despair. It is a message of anticipation. A woman endures the pain of labor because she knows something new is coming. Every tremor in the earth is a reminder that something new is on the way. As Paul puts it in Romans 8:18, the suffering of this present age is not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed.

Faithfulness Will Cost You

The third sign is one that many Western Christians have had the luxury of largely avoiding: persecution. Jesus says plainly that his followers will be hated by all nations for his name's sake. He says that within families there will be betrayal, that the gospel will become a dividing line, and that many will fall away when the pressure intensifies.

Around the world, this is not a future warning. It is a present reality. Believers in Nigeria, Pakistan, Iran, and dozens of other nations are gathering in secret, risking imprisonment and death simply to worship together and hear the Word of God read aloud. There are communities of Christians who pass sheets of music around a candlelit room in the middle of the night, singing hymns silently in their hearts because singing out loud would get them killed.

The uncomfortable truth is that following Jesus faithfully in this world will eventually cost you something. It may cost you a relationship, a career, a reputation, or in some parts of the world, your freedom or your life. The church that is not preparing its people for that reality is leaving them vulnerable. Comfort is not the goal of the Christian life. Faithfulness is.

Do Not Drift

The fourth sign is perhaps the most quietly devastating: apostasy. A falling away. Jesus warns that as lawlessness increases, the love of many will grow cold. As deception intensifies and suffering increases, those who are not anchored in truth will be susceptible to drifting. They will be looking for an easier path, a softer gospel, a version of faith that does not demand anything from them.

The antidote is not complicated, but it requires discipline. It requires getting into the Word of God consistently and letting it shape the way you see the world. It requires community with other believers who will speak truth into your life. It requires a willingness to endure, because Jesus himself says in Matthew 24:13 that the one who endures to the end will be saved.

Where Do You Stand?

The signs are not meant to produce panic. They are meant to produce readiness. The sand is falling. History is moving toward its appointed conclusion. Jesus is coming back, and the world around us is confirming, sign by sign, that we are closer than we have ever been.

The starting place for readiness is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Everything else flows from that. If you are already walking with him, the question worth asking is whether your faith is deep enough to hold you when the pressure comes. Are you in the Word? Are you living with your eyes open? Are you prepared?

Time is passing. The signs are multiplying. And something new is on the way.
