When Faith Costs You Something: Standing Firm in a World That Demands Your Allegiance

There is a thread running through the entire story of God's people, from the earliest pages of Scripture to the last chapter of Revelation. That thread is this: those who belong to God have always been called to pay a price for that belonging. And in the paying of that price, something remarkable happens. The gospel advances. Faith deepens. And the presence of Jesus becomes more real than it has ever been before.

That is not the message our comfort-obsessed culture wants to hear. But it is the message we need.

Blessed, Not Broken

The first time Jesus addresses persecution in the Gospels, He does not open with a warning. He opens with a declaration of blessing. In Matthew 5:10, He describes those who are persecuted for righteousness as blessed, and He goes further, telling His followers to rejoice and be glad when others revile them and speak falsely against them on His account. The reward, He says, is great in heaven.

This framing matters enormously. Before Jesus ever tells us that suffering is coming, He tells us that suffering for His name carries a weight of glory that outpaces the pain. That has to serve as the banner over every conversation about persecution, trial, and the cost of following Christ.

But the blessing is not only reserved for eternity. Those who have endured the deepest suffering for the sake of Jesus consistently report something that is difficult to put into words: an intimacy with Him in that place of suffering that they have never known anywhere else. Corrie Ten Boom, who survived a Nazi concentration camp as a young woman, testified near the end of her life that she would return to that flea-covered cell if it meant experiencing the presence of the Lord the way she did there. Suffering for Christ is not merely something to endure. According to Scripture, it is a fellowship. The Greek word the apostles use when they speak of sharing in Christ's sufferings is koinonia, the very same word used to describe the deep, intimate community of the church.

That changes everything about how we approach the subject.

What Jesus Said Is Coming

In Matthew 24, Jesus speaks plainly about the days ahead. He points His followers back to the prophecy of Daniel, describing an abomination of desolation that will stand in the holy place. He warns of a great tribulation unlike anything the world has ever seen or will ever see again. He speaks of false Christs rising with such convincing signs and wonders that, if it were possible, even the elect would be led astray.

He is not telling us these things to frighten us. He is telling us so that we will be prepared.
Think of it this way. A student who walks into a comprehensive exam with months of careful preparation is still aware that the test will be difficult. But fear has been replaced by readiness. Jesus has, in effect, placed a preparation guide in our hands through His Word. Every prophecy, every warning, every vision recorded in Scripture exists so that when the moment of testing arrives, we are not caught off guard.

The Counterfeit Kingdom

In Revelation 13, the apostle John is given a vision that puts flesh on what Jesus described. He sees a beast rising from the sea, empowered by the dragon, which is Satan himself. He sees the world marveling at this beast and worshiping it. He sees a second beast rising from the earth, one that looks like a lamb but speaks like a dragon. Peaceful in appearance. Deceptive in nature.

The structure is unmistakable. God the Father sends His Son, the true Christ, and the Holy Spirit glorifies the Son. Satan sends an Antichrist, empowered by his own authority, and a false prophet who exists to draw worship toward that counterfeit. Everything God creates, Satan attempts to imitate. Everything that is true, Satan works to replace with a convincing forgery.

This is not only a future reality. We can already see the shape of it forming in a world that increasingly demands total ideological allegiance and grows hostile toward those who will not comply. When any system, ideology, or power structure says you may hold your private beliefs as long as they do not interfere with what we require of you, the spirit of the Antichrist is already at work. It looks like a lamb. It speaks the language of love and inclusion and progress. But the fruit of it is the silencing of truth and the erosion of the image of God in human life.

Your Name in the Book

Here is the hinge on which everything turns. Revelation 13 tells us that all who dwell on the earth will worship the beast, everyone, that is, whose name has not been written in the Lamb's Book of Life. There is a people who will not bow. Not because they are stronger or smarter or more disciplined than everyone else, but because they truly belong to Jesus. Because the real thing lives inside them, and they know the difference between the genuine and the counterfeit.

The question, then, is not whether an Antichrist is coming. The question is whether your name is written in that book.

Your name is written there the moment the sacrifice of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, is applied to your sin. When you are born again through His life, death, and resurrection, you become His. And those who are His will not bow to a counterfeit.

How to Stand

If perseverance is the call, then it must be possible. And it is. But it requires preparation that begins today, not when the pressure arrives.

Know what you believe and why you believe it. Know to whom you belong. Be rooted in the church. Be filled with the Holy Spirit. And kill every idol now. Every schedule, every hobby, every comfort, every ambition that quietly competes with the supremacy of Jesus in your life, surrender it. Because the way you give Jesus your allegiance in the crisis is by giving Him your allegiance today.

Do not be surprised when faithfulness costs you something. Jesus promised it would. And do not compromise to avoid the discomfort, because the blessing, the reward, the fellowship with Jesus, is found on the other side of that cost.

The call to endure is not a threat. It is an invitation into something more real and more alive than anything this world can offer.
