There is a question buried near the end of Revelation 6 that does not get nearly enough attention. After describing cosmic upheaval, darkened skies, trembling mountains, and kings hiding in caves, the text simply asks: "Who can stand?" It is a haunting question. It is also the most important question any of us will ever face.
To answer it well, we have to be willing to sit with some difficult truths about the world we live in, the history we are part of, and the future that is coming. Because the Bible does not describe the return of Christ as a distant theological abstraction. It describes it as the most real, most visible, most unmistakable event in human history.
The Return Will Be Impossible to Miss
In Matthew 24, Jesus describes his return in terms that leave no room for ambiguity. The sun will be darkened. The moon will give no light. The sign of the Son of Man will appear in the heavens. Every tribe of the earth will mourn when they see him coming on the clouds with power and great glory.
This is not the kind of event you hear about secondhand. There will be no need to scroll through a news feed or wait for a commentator to explain what is happening. Every person on the planet will know. The return of Christ will be physical, visible, and unmistakable. He will come to rescue and redeem his people while bringing justice and judgment on evil.
And when that moment comes, a trumpet will sound. His people will be gathered from the four winds. The imagery Jesus uses would have resonated deeply with his original audience. When a conquering king returned to his city, the people who were loyal to him would rush out to meet him before he entered, forming a triumphal procession to escort him in. That is the picture here. Believers will meet the Lord in the air and escort him as he comes to make all wrongs right and restore all things.
The World We Live in Is Not an Accident
Revelation 6 opens with the breaking of seven seals, and the first five paint a picture that is deeply familiar to anyone paying attention to the world around them. The four horsemen of the apocalypse describe false Christs bringing deception, wars stripping the earth of peace, economic crisis and famine widening the gap between the powerful and the vulnerable, and natural disaster and disease leaving mass death in their wake.
These are not simply predictions about a distant future. They describe the consistent reality of human history since the ascension of Christ. False religions and false teachers have always sought to conquer and deceive. War has marked nearly every generation. Economic injustice has always protected the powerful at the expense of the weak. Disease and famine have never left the stage.
The fifth seal shifts the focus specifically to believers, showing the souls of those who were killed for their faith crying out from beneath the altar: "How long, O Lord?" It is the cry of every suffering Christian in every century. When will justice come? When will this end?
The answer given is not cold or indifferent. It is intimate. They are given white robes. They are told to rest a little longer. There are more who will come to faith. There are more who will be sealed.
The Seal That Matters Most
In chapter 7, before the seventh seal is ever opened, everything pauses. Four angels stand at the corners of the earth, holding back the winds of judgment. Another angel cries out: do not harm the earth until we have sealed the servants of God on their foreheads.
Most people who have spent time in end-times discussions have heard about the mark of the beast. Far fewer have spent time asking about this mark, the seal of the living God placed on his servants. The apostle Paul describes it in Ephesians as the sealing of the Holy Spirit given to every believer at the moment of faith, a guarantee of redemption that cannot be taken away.
God is holding back his judgment. Not because he is slow or indifferent, but because he is patient. As the apostle Peter writes, the Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise, but is patient, not willing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. Every day that passes without the return of Christ is a day in which one more person can be reached, one more life can be transformed, one more soul can be sealed.
Who Gets to Stand
The 144,000 described in Revelation 7 is not a small, exclusive club. It is a symbolic number drawn from the 12 tribes of Israel multiplied by the 12 apostles multiplied by a number representing a multitude beyond counting. It is the sum total of all believers from every age, every nation, every tribe, every language. And when John hears 144,000 and turns to look, he sees a great multitude that no one could number, standing before the throne, clothed in white robes, holding palm branches, and crying out that salvation belongs to God and to the Lamb.
This is the answer to the question the sixth seal asked. Who can stand on the day of judgment? Those who have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. Those who have placed their faith in Christ, not in their own goodness or moral effort, but in the one who died in their place and rose from the dead.
They will hunger no more. They will thirst no more. The scorching heat will not strike them. The Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, guiding them to springs of living water. And God himself will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
The Invitation That Remains Open
Your suffering has an expiration date. The pain, the grief, the uncertainty of this life are real, but they are not permanent. They have a bookend. The same God who holds the scrolls, who controls the pace of history, who restrains judgment out of patience toward the lost, is the God who promises that one day every wrong will be made right.
The question is simply where you will stand when that day comes. Not whether you will see it, but whether you will stand with him or before him in judgment.
That answer is decided now, in the time that remains, while the angels still hold back the wind.
